Projects Supported

NIHT Topaiyo REDD+

Papua New Guinea

Preserving biodiverse rainforest

This REDD+ project works with communities in Papua New Guineau to preserve 110,000 hectares of tropical rainforest. The project will sequester 60 million tonnes over its 30-year lifetime. Traditional logging company NIHT has changed its approach to forestry by actively protecting and conserving regions of rainforest that were previously assigned for timber extraction.

Nii Kaniti

Ucayali, Peru

Supporting indigenous community forest management

This REDD+ project works to conserve around 120,000 hectares of rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon through sustainable forest management. It works in collaboration with seven communities belonging to two indigenous ethnic groups, Shipibo Conibo and Cacataibo. The project combines conservation efforts with initiatives to improve the livelihoods of the native communities.

Empower

Nigeria

Cleaning up plastic pollution

Empower is building a global plastic waste ecosystem based on the same philosophy as the Norwegian bottle deposit system. Empower is cleaning up the world while fighting poverty by providing wages to those in need.

Plastic Bank

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Preventing ocean plastic pollution with coastal recycling ecosystems

Plastic Bank® empowers the regenerative society. They build ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities, and reprocess the materials for reintroduction into the global supply chain as Social Plastic®. Their members receive a premium for the materials they collect which helps them provide basic family necessities such as groceries, cooking fuel, school tuition, and health insurance.

Eden Reforestation Projects

Madagascar

Planting and restoring mangroves in Madagascar

Eden employs local people in north-western Madagascar to reforest ecologically devastated land with native mangroves. They work with communities with high poverty levels who otherwise are forced to resort to deforestation to survive. Eden launched their first Madagascar site in 2007 and have already planted 402 million trees.

Badyar Hydropower

Uttarakhand, India

Generating clean energy

The Badyar 4.9MW hydropower project has a total installed capacity of 4.90 MW to generate clean energy using the energy of the flowing stream. The project generates about 25.62 GWh of gross power annually and avoids approximately 19,301 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.

Ishasha Hydropower

Uganda

Generating clean energy

The Ishasha hydropower project is a 6.4 MW renewable energy run-of-river project with an annual electricity production of 31,596 MWh. The project is located 500 meters below the border of Bwindi Forest National Park in the Kanungu District of Western Uganda.

Carbon Sequestered by Planting Trees

Tree Logo.png

674,520

tonnes of carbon sequestered over 25 years by planting mangrove trees

The carbon sequestered by planting trees is not included in our carbon metric, because our partner Eden Reforestation Projects is not a certified carbon offsetting project. However, the mangrove trees they plant are extremely efficient at sequestering carbon.

Eden Reforestation Projects has established that a mature mangrove forest (25 years old) sequesters 840 tonnes of carbon per hectare. Based on a planting density of 10,000 mangroves per hectare, each mangrove planted is responsible for sequestering around 308kg of CO2 over the course of its 25-year growing life.

The 2,190,000 mangroves planted by Edenred, therefore, will have sequestered about 674,520 tonnes of CO2 by 2046.
